“You have a very rare form of soft tissue cancer known as a Cutaneous Angiosarcoma” my St Joe Oncologist announced. “I have never seen this before and we have no treatment for you at St,.Joes. I am referring you to the Sarcoma Clinic at Princess Margaret Hospital – phone to set an appointment”. I asked for a copy of the report sent to PMH and picked up a collection of documents on my way out of St. Joes. The bump on the top of my head is a highly differentiated tumour. In other areas of the face were poorly differentiated patterns of malignant cells with some thickened areas on the left and right cheek. OK – I now have an initial diagnosis of my ailment and possibly a rough journey ahead. Coming to think about my early demise. Having a cancer near the surface of my epidermis suggested to me, as a lay-person. that treatments are likely available and effective – compared to having to treat cancers buried inside tissues and or vital organs. On to Princess Margaret Hospital and the University Health Network
